Our production of Blood Brothers (play version) is directed by a newcomer to the EAT, Mark Slaughter. But Mark is no stranger to the local theatre scene.

He’s been performing for many years and recently, has increasingly turned his hand to directing. Mark’s previous productions include Sweeney Todd (Bob Hope and Geoffrey Whitworth theatres), Dracula, Pack of Lies and Once a Catholic (Bob Hope Theatre).

We asked Mark to tell us about Blood Brothers and why he wanted to direct this play version.

Mark: I like plays in which stuff happens! I am not drawn to plays which revolve around people sitting on sofas discussing ideas. But I am also fascinated by human relationships, class and geo-politics. I am a big fan of Ancient Greek Theatre and Greek Tragedy, and Blood Brothers ticks many of my boxes of interest! The themes are big – murder, revenge, betrayal etc, but the world in which this story is set is recognisable and familiar; domestic even. All the characters go on their own great individual; journeys throughout this play which, above all, is funny, poignant and a cracking story!

Mark has a little extra insight into the story he’s directing, as he is the father of twins himself, although his memories don’t include any eerie “Shining” style spookiness!

Mark: My kids are boy and girl, so always felt more like brother and sister than twins since they were little. The only thing I really recall about them in those early, chaotic years, was the benefit of having two exact same sized babies, able (if not willing!) to be dressed in entirely interchangeable clothes regardless of gender! And the other thing I remember is that (their) feeding and sleeping schedules rarely aligned!!!

How about other siblings in film, TV or literature, any favourites?

Mark: I have a few…. Sisters Louise and June in the Musical Gypsy, the brother and sister in Schitts Creek and, of course, Bette Davis and Joan Crawford in Whatever Happened to Baby Jane?

And finally, why should people come to see Blood Brothers?

Mark: Audiences will be treated to a terrific ensemble of actors presenting a gripping, funny, human and poignant story which rattles along at pace!

Our production of Blood Brothers (play version) is a real family affair. As well as Mark, two other members of our creative team have twins in the family and we have two pairs of siblings in our cast as well! Sisters Clare and Anna McNamara are playing Mrs Johnston and Linda. And our Blood Brothers are Ben and Ollie Guindi – not twins but real life brothers!
