War of the Worlds, A Play for Radio
By Eric Whiting & Penny Walshe (based on the novel by HG Wells)
Directed by Lindsay Dale

15th – 22nd February 2025

About the Play:
This new adaptation of HG Wells’ classic tale of Martian invasion was written for the theatre’s re-opening in February 2025. We needed something that did not require elaborate sets or staging and could be put on with a limited rehearsal time. By presenting it as a radio play, we were able to perform with scripts in hand and showcase the theatre’s new technology to create visual and sound effects, alongside foley artists on stage providing the sounds for everything from crackling fires to the caw cawing of seagulls!

The original story of War of the Worlds is narrated by an unnamed male character, relating his experiences. This new version largely stays true to that original story, but is set some 17 years later, with the central character’s daughter acting as narrator, looking back on her father’s adventures.
