Ambiguous Proposition

Ambiguous Proposition is written by employment lawyer, Shona Newmark and is based on her decades of experience of working on cases where sexual harassment was alleged. It makes a nuanced case for the ‘other side’, the person accused. You may take the view that the banter and behaviour is clearly harassment, based on what you see. You may assess that it isn’t. You may even fall somewhere in between, (a difficult place to be in a yes or no, right or wrong world). 

A one-woman monologue performed by Hilary Cordery, the play outlines the legal test applied to sexual harassment to allow each audience member to make their own judgment on whether it happened or not, based on the facts as they are presented. The narrative is told from the perspective of the alleged harasser’s mother, and looks at the impact of the allegations on her own life and aspirations. 

Ambiguous Proposition was previewed at the Skye Bridge Studios on the Isle of Skye in August 2024, and subsequently performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival that year, where it received a 5* review (from David Kerr of Counter Culture). It has since been performed at Bromley Little Theatre and the Union Theatre. .
