The action is set in the home of the wildly eccentric Lord and Lady Angkatell, and their cousin Henrietta, a sculptor. A weekend house party brings an array of assorted relations — including impoverished second cousin Midge, a dress shop assistant, and wealthy estate owning cousin Edward — with friends from London, Dr John Cristow, who “hates sick people” and his timid “sweet, treacle” wife Gerda. The Hollow is an old country house, still with servants including the devoted butler, Gudgeon and a trainee maid, Doris. During Friday night cocktails, a stranger arrives, Veronica Craye, a glamorous Hollywood movie star, who astounds everyone by claiming that Dr Cristow was her former lover. Veronica ardently desires to marry Cristow and succeeds in re-opening their affair but is unable to get him to divorce his wife. And Veronica states that if she cannot have him, no one shall. Five minutes later Cristow is dead.

When Inspector Colquhoun and Sergeant Penny arrive on the scene, they discover that nearly everyone had a motive and the opportunity to kill Cristow, but can they catch the killer before he or she strikes again?
