Rossum's Universal Robots [RUR]
by Karel Capek
directed by Mark CampbellSynopsis
RUR is a science fiction play by Czech playwright Karel Capek. It premiered in 1921 and is noted for introducing the term 'robot' into the English language. The play begins in a factory that makes artificial people called 'robots'. Unlike the modern usage of the term, these creatures are closer to the modern idea of androids or even clones, as they can be mistaken for humans and can think for themselves. They seem happy to work for humans, although that soon changes and a hostile robot rebellion leads to the extinction of the human race...Cast

Loot
by Joe Orton
directed by Viv StapletonA black farce masterpiece, Loot follows the fortunes of two young thieves, Hal and Dennis. Dennis is a hearse driver for an undertaker. They have robbed the bank next door to the funeral parlour and have returned to Hal's home to hide out with the loot. Hal's mother has just died and the pair put the money in her coffin, hiding the body elsewhere in the house. With the arrival of Inspector Truscott, the thickening plot turns topsy-turvy.
Playing with all the conventions of popular farce, Orton creates a world gone mad and examines in detail English attitudes in the mid 1960s. The play has been called a Freudian nightmare, which sports with superstitions about death - and life. First produced in London in 1966, Loot was hailed as "the most genuinely quick-witted, pungent and sprightly entertainment by a new, young British playwright for a decade" (Sunday Telegraph)
Cast
Richard Self (Truscott), Jennifer McCarthy (Faye), Richard Banks (McLeavy), Ben Cowen (Hal), Rod Henderson (Dennis)

Strippers
by Peter Terson
directed by John HartM4, F6
Inspired by a television documentary, Peter Terson's play looks at the world of the North East England strippers, centring on Wendy and Bernard, a young couple whose lives are up-ended when Wendy turns, reluctantly, to stripping to support the family after Bernard is made redundant. Although Bernard quite happily watches the 'exotic dancers' over a couple of pints at the club, when it comes to his wife it's a different matter...
