'The Beauty Queen of Leenane' | 15th February - 22nd February 2020
Synopsis: Probably best known for his screenwriting after last years Oscar winning Three Billboards outside Epping Missouri, Beauty Queen is one of Martin McDonagh’s early plays. Set in a backwater village in the west of Ireland, The Beauty Queen of Leenane tells the darkly comic tale of Maureen Folan, a plain and lonely woman in her early forties, who takes care of Mag, her manipulative and insufferable mother. The story follows their mundane, spiteful and vindictive relationship, in this often laugh out loud comedy, where we are also introduced to neighbour Ray Dooley. Then an old beau , Ray’s older brother, Pato, comes to town, offering to steal our lonely heroine away. Maureen’s first, and potentially last, loving relationship with a man , sets in motion a train of events that is as gothically funny as it is horrific. Then everything goes feck..g insane.
2 Female 2 Male.
All characters need to be able to speak in a convincing Irish accent. Ages are a little flexible, particularly those of Pato and Ray.
Maureen: lead female playing age 40ish, put upon skivvy. Lonely with her life, Maureen is wilful and malicious but also lacks self confidence. Although described as plain, it is through the life she has led and she is more worn out than unattractive. A contradictory complex character.
Mag: lead female, playing age, above 60. Liar, conniving and controlling of, but also dependant upon Maureen. Has some health issues which she plays upon, however a subtlety is needed in the playing.
Both women are manipulative, selfish and at times self pitying but also show signs of vulnerability and sadness in their relationship.
Mag and Maureen provide the opportunity for two actors to show the diversity of their talents and producing a dysfunctional co-dependant relationship between them is key.
Pato: playing age above 40. (Pato could be older than Maureen) . A working man; shy, decent, sensitive, strong and sensible.
Ray: playing age 25-35. Complete contrast to his brother, loud mouthed and at times insensitive. Soap opera addict desperate to escape a small life. Has some great lines.
