Review
Levy pokes fun at the male bravura
The Edward Alderton Theatre's production of the Benn W Levy comedy The Rape of the Belt got off to a rather muted start last Saturday. This play uses the ninth labour of Hercules, the capture of the belt of the Queen of the Amazons, to make fun of the male sex: strength, bravura and valour count for little against the innocent charms of Antiope and Hippolyte, sister queens of the all-female nation.
It seems a bit dated in these days of sex equality, but there are plenty of opportunities for fun. The muscle-bound David Hall was well-cast as the hero, neatly teamed with Neil Carter as the wimpish Theseus. Susan Coral Hampton hit the right camp note as the dizzy Hippolyte but Allison Henderson needed more queenly confidence in her delivery. Beryl Smith provided a good knockabout cameo as the larger-than-life Hippobomene and Maureen Hardwen and John Wharton played together well as the sniping rulers of Olympus, Hera and Zeus. John Wharton designed the set. The play, directed by Mavis Dunphy, runs until Saturday
