Review

Not a typical Saturday night out

The pulsating music, the atmospheric lighting, the guys are getting lagered up, the girls are getting ready for a night out, the bouncers are on the door - a normal night on the [Bexley] Broadway? No, a thoroughly enjoyable Saturday night at the Edward Alderton Theatre in Bexleyheath, in its production of Bouncers by John Godber.

Gaynor Fisher's debut direction of this play, enhanced by Godber's excellent script, provided an evening of exceptional entertainment. Lucky Eric (Keith King), Les (David Oatley), Judd (Keith Dunn) and Ralph (Peter Griffin) met the unsuspecting audience at the doors - in typical bouncer style making sure there was no trouble.

Peter Griffin excelled as Sexy Susan and DJ Michael D. Keith Dunn played overweight Elaine with a humorous poignancy. Keith King's individual speeches as Lucky Eric showed a depth to his character not normally displayed. David Oatley doubled as Sweet Rose and the bouncer Les, who had a dark and potentially dangerous side to his character.

Fisher's first class direction made for a tight production that flowed from one scene to another. Sound operator Keith Dungate and effects technicians John Buckle and Jerry McKeon were an integral part of this play, that worked well in an intimate theatre where the set was secondary to the technical and acting achievements of the cast.
