Review
Studio version packs a punch
The musical Blood Brothers has proved one of the most remarkable theatre successes of the past decade, a show that has thrived more on the strengths of its songs than its plot and which continues to earn standing ovations night after night in the West End. But what happens if you take away many of the characters in Willy Russell's story and ditch almost all the songs?
Last week the Edward Alderton Theatre presented the studio version of the show. Director Roz Betts succeeded in coaxing such strong performances from her cast that much of the emotional power of the piece stayed intact. Peter Gray brought just the right air of cold intensity to the part of the mysterious narrator and Peter Griffin and Brian Callar were excellent as the twins, both as children and adults. Gaynor Fisher, too, brought a bubbly seductiveness to her early scenes as Linda and Julie Lovelock generated a powerful performance as Mrs Johnston.
