'Rattle of a Simple Man'

Directed by John Hart

in performance 10th February - 17th February 2018

Synopsis:

When a group of northern soccer fans are down in London for the Cup Final one of their number winds up with a lady of the night. As they talk, the unsophisticated and naive lad starts to believe he has found true love.

Percy Winthram, a 39-year-old virginal bachelor who is an avid football fan, comes to London to see the Cup Final. Before his scheduled bus trip back to Manchester, he joins his friends Ginger, Chalky, Ozzie, and Fred, a rowdy group of Manchester millworkers, for a night on the town. In a Soho striptease club, Ginger insults Cyrenne, an attractive, blonde, Italian bar hostess/prostitute, and soon Percy's companions trick him into wagering his motorcycle against £50 that he will take her home and sleep with her. Cyrenne overhears this and playfully lets Percy escort her home. Percy's inhibitions overcome him when Cyrenne begins to undress and invites him to bed, and the two ends up talking through the night. During the conversation, Percy begins to shed his timidity while Cyrenne's earlier claims of an aristocratic background are revealed as a fantasy she employed to conceal her sordid family life. They finally agree to go away on a holiday together, and, if all goes well, to get married. Before dawn, Percy races away to catch his bus, but a view of Cyrenne's face on an advertisement compels him to stop the bus, leave his friends, and hurry back to her.
